Motorola invests in BPL chipmaker

Motorola Ventures, the equity investment arm of Motorola, has invested in Intellon, a provider of integrated circuits with a focus on broadband over powerline (BPL).
Details of the 16-year-old company’s B round were not disclosed. Intellon was not immediately available for comment.
Intellon sells chips that use existing home power grids for home networking and plans to introduce a 200 Mb/s home-networking chip set later this year. The company, which claims to have sold 2 million chips to date, is also working with the HomePlug Power Alliance on a BPL standard.
"Motorola remains committed to developing and delivering next-generation technologies like BPL," said Matthew Growney, managing director of Motorola Ventures, in a statement issued today.
In July, East Coast BPL service provider Current Communications announced investment from Goldman, Sachs & Co., Google and media giant Hearst Corp.
