Ditttberner Associates’ quarterly report this week showed that IP convergence drove growth for multi-service switches and routers in service provider networks to $1.68 billion in the second quarter.
The 9% rise was due largely to carriers migrating away from ATM and Frame Relay services to converged IP services.
With over $736.5 million in revenue for the quarter, Cisco Systems has captured 43.8% of the market share. That’s almost three times as much as Nortel Networks (15.55%) and more than double that of Juniper Networks (18.08%.) Other vendors make up the remaining 22.56% of market share.
Juniper generated just over $304 million, while Nortel generated just under $261.4 million.
The market share leader board for both core and edge solutions was the same with Cisco leading with 51.52% and 36.76% respectively thanks to a 4.8% growth quarter-over quarter.
The report said that edge equipment accounted for 53% of revenues in the quarter and that 72% of revenue from both core and edge market came from router sales. Multi-service switches generated only 28% of revenue.
Despite a 1% decline by Nortel from last quarter, the company maintained its lead in core and edge switching with a 56.6% market share. Alcatel was second in switching market share with 15.74%. Cisco held a 55.63% lead in the router market. Juniper’s 24.93% market share was second.
All companies need to keep an eye on Huawei, which had 100% growth in its routing business in the quarter.
