Broadwing eases VoIP migration

Boston – Broadwing used the VON Conference to show off its new SIP-based services, including Enterprise SIP solutions, an all-in-one VoIP utility service aimed at larger corporate users.

Capitalizing on Broadwing’s Converged Network VoIP capabilities, unveiled last June, the Enterprise SIP solution delivers integrated voice and data access over the wide area network via a single nationwide interface that ties remote offices into a main headquarters office.

“This eliminates the need to pay for sophisticated equipment, reduces the number of circuits and includes all local and 911 services,” said Harry LaLor, vice president of business development for strategic channels at Broadwing. “We are doing that over the converged network, which has the benefit of QoS and enables our customers to implement VoIP at either Layer 2 or Layer 3, as they choose.”

For most customers, WAN-VoIP integration “is a non-trivial issue” and delivering the VoIP on a converged platform makes the integration easier for customers, he added.

Broadwing is applying its data Service Level Agreements to its VoIP service so customers are guaranteed a four-hour time to repair window, and 100% availability of the service, including the local loop, LaLor said. The service is easily scalable on Broadwing’s national network to meet changing customer needs.

By making the transition to VoIP easier for corporate network managers, Broadwing is trying to provide the incentive to replace aging PBXs or add VoIP integrated access to existing units that can be upgraded to provide SIP, said Donovan Dillon, vice president of marketing for Broadwing.

“Telecom managers are looking for the cost justification for the cap-ex involved in this transition,” he said. “There is already a significant migration from frame relay and ATM toward MPLS and VPLS. Our approach helps nudge enterprises into considering a VoIP upgrade as well.”
