Cisco grows cable play abroad

When not closing acquisitions, as it did six times in its most recent quarter, Cisco found time to close a few sales for its BTS 10200 Call Control Softswitch, the latest, announced today, is with Romanian cable provider Astral Telecom.

Headquartered in Bucharest, Astral is Romania’s largest electronic communication services provider. The company launched its voice-over-IP service in 2004 and has deployed Cisco’s BTS 10200 to deliver enhanced voice services for its Triplay broadband voice, video and data services.

The deal, a million dollar technology upgrade, executes on Cisco CEO John Chambers’ declaration during last month’s earnings call that in addition to architectural evolution, product families and market segments, “The home run again this quarter was the continued balance we've achieved across geographies.”

Cisco also won business from a cable company in Germany in the last month. Kabel Deutschland GmbH, Germany’s largest cable operator, has chosen Cisco’s IP NGN products, including its BTS 10200 softswitch, PGW 2200 media gateway controller and AS5400 Series media gateways, to build its VoIP services. Astral will use Cisco technology extensively in the aggregation layers as well as PSTN and universal gateways to interconnect with national and international telephone networks.

Astral Telecom began operations in 1993 as a local cable television operator in Cluj Napoca, an important historical and cultural center in Transylvania. By 2004, the company had a presence in over 800,000 dwelling units across 170 locations, with over 100 of them also served by Internet services. Dinu Malacopol, CEO of Astral Telecom said in a statement that the carrier-grade capability of the Cisco softswitch solution has helped to establish Astral as one of the main challengers to the incumbent operator in Romania.

More recent evidence of Cisco’s concentration on winning across geographies were announced in the latest quarterly results last month including a multimillion dollar contract with Swisscom for its CRS-1 Carrier Routing System and a joint announcement with Fujitsu on the introduction of a Fujitsu and Cisco CRS-1 Carrier Routing System built on the Cisco IOS XR next-generation operating system.
