Chicago–Following a string of advanced services announcements, Global Crossing today said it has quadrupled the capacity of its IP backbone network, deploying multiple 10 Gb/s links between points of presence in its core network and providing a hub that is Terabit-capable and ready for the transition to OC-768.

The upgrade is occurring as the one-time glut of fiber is being consumed by bandwidth-hungry enterprises, said Anthony Christie, chief marketing office for Global Crossing. That includes demand for streaming video and music, IPTV and other bandwidth-consumptive applications.

In the first quarter of 2006, Global Crossing recorded a 280% year-over-year growth in IP VPN traffic, as more of its customers integrate their voice, data and video onto IP.

“It is the power of having a VoIP footprint that is global,” Christie said. “We have built an integrated collaboration suite into the platform that lowers their cost and lowers our cost to provide them with audio conferencing, video conferencing and Web conferencing.”
