Herndon, Va., gets FiOS TV
more on the topic
Verizon Monday announced Herndon, Va., as the second site of its FiOS TV rollout. The service, delivered over Verizon’s FiOS fiber-to-the-home network, made its debut Sept. 22 in Keller, Texas.
The company also indicated it will be moving to offer the TV service in other areas in which it has obtained franchises, including Fairfax County and Fairfax City in Virginia, and communities in California, Florida, Massachusetts, New York and Texas. Verizon holds 16 video franchises – 15 for individual communities and one for the entire state of Texas.
The FiOS TV service combines regular broadcast cable with IPTV-based video on demand service, according to a Verizon spokeswoman. The company has deployed Microsoft TV set-tops, adapted for hybrid use.
“The IPTV technology is available and scaleable today for video on demand,” she said. “This approach positions us for the future, as we add more IP capability.”
FiOS TV features 330 total channels including 180 digital video and music channels, the Mid-Atlantic Sports Network, more than 20 high-definition channels and more than 1,110 video-on-demand titles, a number which increases to 1800 next month.
Basic service, at $12.95 per month, offers 15 to 39 local broadcast weather and community channels as well as access to on-demand programming if the subscriber chooses a digital set-top. Expanded Basic at $39.95 a month offers more than 180 video and music channels a month and also provides access to more on-demand content, using either a standard digital set-top or a high-definition set-top for HD content, which is provided at no extra charge. The on-demand content includes some free programming such as sports and news as well as movies at $2.95 to $3.95 through a digital set-top.
Specialized packages provide additional sports or movie programming for additional fees. Verizon is also offering premium channels such as HBO and Cinemax for additional fees.
Verizon is using the capacity made available by fiber optics to tailor content for language and ethnic groups. La Conexión is an alternative to its Expanded Basic service designed for bilingual consumers who enjoy TV programs in English and Spanish, for $32.95 per month. Other specific programming choices target African-American, Asian, Russian and other multicultural and ethnic audiences.
Verizon is providing free installation of FiOS TV for up to three televisions in a household.
Verizon has individual franchises in the California cities of Beaumont and Murietta; in Sachse, Wylie, Keller and Westlake, Texas; in Quantico Marine Corp Base, Fort Belvoir, Fairfax County and the City of Fairfax in Virginia; in Temple Terrace and Manatee County in Florida; and in Massapequa Park, N.Y. It also has authority to serve 21 additional Texas towns under its statewide franchise agreement.
