Verizon has enhanced the residential communications command center it sells with its DSL service to include e-mail access, enriched weather maps, the latest entertainment news, sneak peaks at upcoming movies, wireless home networking, the latest lottery results and the ability to transfer cell-phone photos to the Verizon One phone.

The new Verizon One advanced home communications system integrates a DSL modem, an 802.11g wireless router, a 5.8 GigaHertz phone, and a wide color-touch screen with features from Verizon's SuperPages, family event planner and reminder and one-touch access to information on weather, news, sports, stocks and information. The system is designed to be the home phone network as well, with up to four additional handsets.

The Verizon One system and the additional handsets can be purchased on line from Verizon when customers sign up for DSL service. The system costs $199.95 and additional cordless handsets are $79.95 but consumers signing up for one year of Verizon DSL service get a $50 discount on the base system.

Customers can also still get DSL with a regular modem.

The wireless router enables customers to connect multiple computers in the home.

"Verizon One eliminates the need for multiple, costly devices," Christopher Pizzirani, Verizon's vice president of broadband management and development, said in a prepared statement, "including separate modems, phones and electronic organizers. The value of Verizon broadband is made even better with this communications command center."
