XO Communications today said it is using Cisco Systems’ CRS-1 carrier routing system to more than double the capacity of its national IP network. The move paves the way for XO to move to a multi-terabit network in the future, the company said, and supports its move into the IP transit services market.

“Our goal is to deliver the most advanced network infrastructure that enables XO to maintain and strengthen our leadership in providing innovative IP services for our enterprise and service provider customers,” said Randy Nicklas, chief technology officer at XO Communications, said in a statement. “By investing in our IP network with the latest technology, we can respond quickly to the increased demand we are seeing for more bandwidth and continue to pursue new opportunities that will drive revenue with an improved cost basis.”

XO said the upgrade is intended to meet growing demand from enterprise and wholesale customers and will enable it to provide services at speeds up to 10 Gb/s. This is the latest upgrade in a series for XO since it announced its new national network in February of this year. The company has been aggressively rolling out new services and extending the reach of its network.
