CTIA: TV Guide expands mobile content
more on the topic
LAS VEGAS--Gemstar-TV Guide today became the latest traditional media company to enter the wireless space, announcing an interactive program guide for mobile phones and a new wireless TV channel.
The interactive programming guide will allow customers to access local TV listings, plan viewing schedules, access TV Guide editorial features and get personalized reviews for programming. Later on this year, TV Guide plans to add even more interactive features to the portal, allowing viewers not only to schedule viewing reminders and send recommendations to friends, but eventually program personal video recorders remotely.
The mobile TV channel will offer TV Guide content from its traditional broadcast sources but will also mix in short-form, made-for-mobile content targeted specifically at wireless users.
m-Qube, which is being acquired by VeriSign, will handle the transactions and settlement for the new services, while Roundbox technology will render the video for the TV channel and interactive portal. mPortal software will power the handset clients itself, and the Alacre platform will handle the content delivery and management.
