HONG KONG--ECI Telecom is using the ITU Telecom World 2006 to showcase its multiple product lines, including its growing emphasis on carrier Ethernet and its optical transport line.

The company is unveiling a 10 Gigabit LAN transport capability over DWM that uses Optical Transport Networks (OTN) standard as well as carrier Ethernet capabilities for its existing multi-service provisioning platform (MSPP).

The new 10 Gig LAN capabilities are not unique to the industry but using OTN is an industry first, said Ezra Yehezkel, AVP, product line management for the MSPP in ECI’s Optical Networks Division. OTN is an architecture used to carry next-gen Ethernet and IP services that is growing in popularity. To date, the ITU-T has not yet specified how 10 Gig LAN signals should be mapped to OTN.

“We are out there a little early with OTN,” Yehezkel said. “The system is all optics with 10G layered on top of OTN which gives you all the LAN connectivity with an optical infrastructure,” that doesn’t require optical to electrical conversions.

The carrier Ethernet capabilities for ECI’s XDM MSPP product acknowledges the growing appeal of Carrier Ethernet and its potential use for triple play services, business VPNs, wholesale applications, and more, Yehezkel said.

“We are introducing a product with real Quality of Service that is a way of giving operators a means to introduce new services,” he said.

Service providers can leverage their existing Sonet/SDH infrastructure to offer premium Ethernet, Yehezkel added.
