Broadband additions slowed in the second quarter of 2007, but DSL claimed more than half of the new adds, according to a report released by the Leichtman Research Group.

The new report comes about two weeks after Broadbandtrends reported Verizon was adding FiOS customers at more than two times the rate it is gaining DSL net-adds.

The total broadband net adds for North American cable and telco operators was 1,718,130, which is about 400,000 less than the second quarter of 2006. Of that total, telecom service providers claimed 925,000 subscribers, or about 54%. Cable continues to lead in overall market share with 54% of the total market, or about 5.1 million more subscribers than telcos, according to Leichtman.

Broadbandtrends reported Verizon saw FiOS net adds grow 15% in the second quarter to more than 200,000, even as DSL net adds declined 64%. Some of those former DSL customers switched to FiOS – about 22% or 45,000 of the net FiOS adds are former DSL customers. FiOS had 1,067,000 customers at quarter’s end, according to Broadbandtrends.
