Motorola adds Leapstone to service delivery solutions

Motorola filled in the boxes on its service delivery strategy this week, agreeing to acquire Leapstone Systems, a Somerset, NJ-based platform provider for creating, managing and delivering converged video, voice and data services.
Leapstone is the latest in a series of acquisitions by Motorola in the service and content delivery space. The company also recently acquired Modulus, Broadbus, Kreatel, Tut Systems and Netopia. All are part of Motorola’s solution for getting into the creation and delivery of multimedia services.
“Yes, we’ve done a number of acquisitions around expanding our portfolio,” said Geoff Roman, strategy and business development leader of Motorola’s Home and Networks Mobility division.
He said Leapstone fits in between the delivery platform for voice, video and data and the management functions such as ordering, provisioning and customer care. “It enables our carrier customers to take content from a variety of sources and in a variety of formats and deliver them in a seamless way and appropriately bill for them, manage them and switch them.
Leapstone’s Communications Convergence Engine (CCE) product suite is a real-time service delivery platform for both fixed and mobile network operators and features both service broker and content management functions.
“Historically we had solutions for the wireless business working with third parties, but service delivery is something we didn’t have in the multimedia space,” Roman said.
Leapstone’s platform is deployed in both AT&T’s and Verizon Wireless’ networks.
The deal is expected to close in the third quarter of this year. Leapstone employees will stay in Somerset, Roman said.
