Syniverse Technologies announced a multi-year agreement this week to provide data-clearing services to SmarTone-Vodafone in Hong Kong. SmartTone-Vodafone, which launched in 1992 and was first to launch GSM service in Asia a year later, had almost 1.1 million customers in Hong Kong at the end of 2006.
The operator will use Syniverse’s Access S&E GSM Clearinghouse Services exchange of roamer billing records with other mobile operators. Access S&E also provides access to more than 100 types of business and financial reports that will allow SmarTone-Vodafone to analyze and manage its roaming business more efficiently.
Stephen Chau, chief technology officer at SmarTone-Vodafone, said the company decided to move its data clearing to Syniverse’s platform to ensure compliance with industry standards as well as a seamless exchange of roaming billing records with roaming partners.
The agreement with SmarTone-Vodafone continues the expansion of Syniverse’s GSM data clearing services presence in Asia. Last fall, True Move of Thailand became a new GSM clearing customer for Syniverse in the Asia-Pacific region.
Syniverse also currently provides GSM and CDMA data-clearing services to major mobile operators throughout the Asia Pacific region, including Reliance Communications of India. Syniverse supports 200 million subscribers in the region.
