With a nationwide U.S. carrier as a new customer, equipment vendor Turin Networks is hiring.

As part of a five-year contract, Broadwing began deploying the largest version of Turin’s Traverse multiservice transport platform (the 20-slot version) across its nationwide network this summer, the vendor announced today.

And with a new chief financial officer--former Infinera and Calient Networks CFO William Zerella, named today--the seven-year-old company is planning to add staff. Turin plans to boost its workforce by 15% to 20% next year, hiring across a variety of areas, including customer support and product development. Today the company, which outsources all of its manufacturing, employs 150 people, about 85% of whom are based in North America. The five sales people Turin had a year ago are now 40.

“The market here in North America has been extremely strong,” said Henry Wasik, Turin’s chief executive officer, adding that the company has about 200 customers worldwide.

Turin expects to announce a 10-Gb/s version of its transport platform in the next few months and plans to add multiprotocol label switching capabilities to its transport platform in the first half of next year.

Turin also has a relationship with Ciena, which invested in Turin in 2004 and has sold the Traverse to several European customers but was not involved in the Broadwing deal.
