Convedia today said it has released a new technology, dubbed eXtended Media Processing, that will form the basis of its future product development. Additionally, the company released the first products powered by the technology, the CMS-9000 and the CMS-3000 media servers, which are scheduled to enter trials late in the second quarter.

The eXMP technology initially will be deployed in servers, but will extend to software media server products and Convedia-manufactured DSP accelerator cards. Convedia plans to introduce optimized blades for ATCA and other blade server architectures in 2007.

”This is really Convedia’s take on building carrier class servers,” said Grant Henderson, executive vice president of marketing and strategy for Convedia. “We made it very versatile in how it can be deployed in our platforms and third-party platforms.”

The CMS-9000, which will become the vendor’s flagship, is a carrier-class server and is compatible with the company’s existing CMS-6000 IMS-compliant processor.

“They have the same control interface and the same management interface,” Henderson said. “It’s really broadening the options our partners have. It’s full investment protection for our existing customers.”

The CMS-3000 on the other hand is being positioned as an entry-level server that will be more appropriate for smaller carriers, enterprises or service providers just stepping into the IMS world. The effect for Convedia is that it now can serve any need from two to 20,000 ports, Henderson said.

“It’s allowing us to play in any market regardless of form factor,” he said. “A partner with a foot in both [carrier and enterprise] camps can use the same applications and the same development they’ve done and have a broader set of products.”
