Lucent Technologies will begin integrating BayPackets service delivery platforms into its portfolio of IMS-related solutions including its Accelerate Next-Generation Communications Solutions portfolio. Lucent also will resell both the company’s service delivery and advanced business VoIP services.

Lucent's IP multimedia subsystem (IMS) solutions support the delivery of what Lucent calls “lifestyle services” which are those that blend voice, data and video capabilities. Lucent Worldwide Services will provide engineering, installation, integration and maintenance support for BayPackets' products.

Fremont, Calif.-based BayPackets has worked with Lucent on other projects and targets wireless, wireline and cable operators. Its solutions include the Agility Network Services Platform, which serves as Service Control Point (SCP) for converged networks that supports IP, TDM, and 3G infrastructures. BayPackets’ other primary product is the Agility SIP Application Server, an enhanced services platform designed for VoIP networks.

Lucent’s platform often focuses on the larger service provider, but BayPackets’ can scale down to support a different customer set, said a Lucent spokesman.

BayPackets, which has a subsidiary in India, raised $14 million in fourth-round funding last month.

Lucent will use BayPacket’s technology to complement its MiLife Solution Portfolio. The portfolio includes the Intelligent Services Gateway, application server and media server as well as the VoiceXML Gateway, the SurePay solutions suite for real-time billing for prepaid voice and data applications, and the Short Message Service Center.

“This is really more of a complement to our portfolio; it is certainly not a replacement,” the Lucent spokesman said.

In other news, Lucent and sales business partner, Designed Telecommunications (D-TEL) signed a deal with Lakedale Telephone Co. last week to provide its Accelerate Next-Generation Communications Solutions in support of a network upgrade.

Lakedale, based in Annandale, Minn., is an independent carrier that serves the Midwest region of Minnesota. It is deploying the Lucent Compact Switch to increase network capacity. D-Tel will provide the switch and a full set of turnkey professional services along with Lucent Worldwide Services.
