Adding 13 new customers this year has helped Sonus Networks build a 32% market share to lead the worldwide carrier packet voice market, according to a report issued today by Synergy Research Group.

Sonus’ lead in high-density gateways is almost twice that of the nearest competitor. Jeremy Duke, president and CEO of Synergy Research Group, said carriers on a global basis continue to select Sonus' IMS-ready architecture as the foundation for their next-generation networks. He added that Sonus has proved to be a driving force in the industry’s migration toward IP-based networks.

Sonus is now deployed in 34 countries and has announced partnerships with 56 of the leading network operators. Looking ahead to its 10th year in business in 2007, Sonus Chairman and CEO Hassan Ahmed said there is no doubt that everyone is committed to moving their networks to IP. “And that is reflected in the market as we are seeing an increasing number of operators focus on adopting VoIP into their networks.”

Ahmed said his company also is seeing an increased interest from wireless operators, whereas wireline companies have provided most of its revenue until now. He also said the European market is starting to heat up.

“We are particularly excited about Europe these days,” Ahmed said. “The market took longer to develop than either the U.S. or Japan, which was a bit of a surprise, but over the last 12 months it is moving along nicely.”
