TelcoTV: Comtrend offers ADSL2+, VDSL2 gateway

ANAHEIM, Calif. – Comtrend this week launched a residential gateway device that supports ADSL2+ and VDSL2 services and can serve as a home router on an fiber-to-the-home network through a gigabit WAN port. The CT-5374 WiFi router is intended to create a home network that easily connects devices in the home including local storage, WiFi-enabled digital cameras, set-top boxes and PCs.

“Using an off-the-shelf hard drive plugged into the USB 2.0 port, you create a media server,” said Andrew Morton, general manager-Americas for Comtrend. “You can then pull content – online games, music, photos and over-the-top content -- from the server to a TV set.”

Using a low-cost set-top box, a service provider can deliver all this content at very low cost to the customer, even before being able to deliver a full IPTV offering, Morton said.

“Right now we are in a land grab,” Morton said. “This can enable a very low-cost service.”

The CT-5374 will support delivery of video up to high-definition quality through an ADSL2+ or VDSL2 service and for home networking purposes supports both Digital Living Network Alliance and Universal Plug and Play standards. The gateway comes equipped with 802.11 b/g WiFi and can support 802.11n.
