Verizon adds user-generated content to FiOS TV

Verizon this morning said it will deliver user-generated content from Revver, a Web-based video sharing site, on its Surround broadband entertainment portal and on FiOS TV. The content will be free to subscribers of FiOS TV and Verizon’s broadband services, the company said. Revver videos are already available to Verizon Wireless customers who have Vcast-enabled phones.
The FiOS TV launch will come later this year, while the Surround broadband launch occurs by the end of March.
“We're joining with Revver to bring the user-generated video phenomenon to the TV set,” said Marilyn O'Connell, Verizon senior vice president of video solutions, in a prepared statement. “Backed by Verizon's technology, we'll make it easy for our FiOS TV and broadband customers to enjoy the best of the cutting-edge videos that Revver is known for. This is just another way that FiOS continues to distinguish itself from old-fashioned TV.”
Revver will provide Verizon with a daily feed of videos chosen from its site, which will then be available to Verizon customers via FiOS TV, FiOS Internet or Verizon high-speed Internet access, the company said. In addition, Verizon FiOS TV customers who search for content will have access to Revver video content related to their search topic. Verizon announced the new search capabilities at the Consumer Electronics Show in January, saying they will be available later this year via a new interactive media guide.
Revver differs from YouTube and other user-generated content sites in a couple of ways, according to the company. It does not accept content that is copyrighted and it compensates users who post videos by splitting net revenue 50-50.
