Telco carriers can compete with cable companies and win in the video sector, according to 83% of the more than 1200 respondents to a Tellabs/Telephony survey held on the show floor at Supercomm 2005. Some 54% of respondents believe telcos will be strong contenders in video within three years. A majority, more than 52%, believe cost will be the most important factor for customers seeking a switch from their current cable/video provider. Among services most likely to drive consumers, HDTV appears to be gaining a hold, followed by IPTV and video-on-demand, respectively. As for convergence, 94% believe consumer and business voice, video and data will converge onto a single network within the next five years or less. Survey questions focused on services that inspire “Echo Boomer” spending. Born between the early '80s and 1995, this tech-savvy generation of children of Baby Boomers make up nearly one-third of the U.S. population and is likely to drive communication spending in the future.
