MWA: Amdocs adds Portugal to Vodafone client list

DALLAS--Vodafone Portugal has selected Amdocs operations support systems to streamline its network resource and capacity management in both its 2G and 3G networks. Amdocs said from the TM Forum’s Management World Americas event that it also will support Vodafone’s new DSL service with its OSS.

In addition to supporting the management of network facilities, Amdocs’ inventory, network resource, capacity management and data integrity management solutions will help the Portuguese operator deliver new mobile applications that require bandwidth on-demand, such as games, images, music and specialized content. These solutions are part of the OSS portfolio Amdocs obtained by acquiring Cramer last year for approximately $375 million.

Vodafone Portugal has 4.78 million mobile subscribers.

“We have a number of Vodafone customers we are working with,” said Cassandra Millhouse, director of product marketing for Amdocs’ OSS division. “Vodafone Portugal has just made its selection, so we will begin managing its 2G and 3G transmission networks and provide visibility into their network resources.”

Vodafone Portugal also will use Amdocs OSS for process re-engineering and automation and the consolidation of multiple existing legacy systems onto a single, integrated OSS platform. The operator also is looking to gain visibility into its network resources such as cards, circuits and devices and to quickly determine when capacity is exceeded and when allocation of additional network resources is required.

Despite the discussion this week of large network and business transformation projects, Millhouse said Vodafone Portugal goes against that grain. “While large operators who have taken that route are underway, smaller operators are choosing to undertake their transformation projects one step at a time,” she said. “Vodafone Portugal is an example of a company looking to make changes in an evolutionary manner rather than in a big multi-phase, multi-year cycle.”
