USING DPI AS A STRATEGIC BUSINESS TOOL
U.K.-based PlusNet, a BT-owned ISP with about 300,000 users, revamped its entire business, using DPI to set up multiple service tiers for both businesses and consumers, and to allow its customers to both customize their service offerings and track their bandwidth usage. PlusNet’s premium offers have been popular among high value customers, enabling this ISP to grow rapidly in one of the world’s most competitive broadband markets. In making a dramatic change to its business model, PlusNet remain consumer friendly by giving its existing customers an opt-out option and giving consumers more information about – and control of – their bandwidth usage. Allistair Wyse, PlusNet, CTO will describe what his company is doing.

Sponsored by Allot Communications
DPI enables a variety of different new service possibilities for network operators, along with the ability to manage network resources more effectively. Matt Davis, broadband analyst with IDC, explains how DPI can be used to offer better security and corporate network protection; in-network parental controls, automated bandwidth boosts for high-quality video traffic, quality assurance for VoIP services and more. Davis also will explain how service providers can use subscriber and traffic profiles to control bandwidth flows, and make optimum use of network facilities. In addition, Davis will share his research on consumer attitudes toward bandwidth management, and explain the impact on service provider strategies.
DPI: THE REGULATORY CHALLENGE
Sponsored by CloudShield
Alissa Cooper, Chief Computer Scientist at the Center for Democracy & Technology will spell out concerns about the use of DPI within consumer groups and regulators, and spell out for the industry what needs to be done to enable this technology to be used to greatest benefit. Topics will include consumer notification, transparency of service provider behavior, opt-in options, and potential industry-wide education efforts.
