Skype, Google and Sequoia Capital joined funding round leader Index Ventures in investing $21.7 million in FON, a three-month-old company based in Madrid, Spain, that intends to build a globally networked infrastructure of Wi-Fi hot spots.
It was the Series A funding round for FON, which plans to create a network of 1 million hot spots by 2010. The company also announced that Niklas Zennstrvm, Skype CEO and co-founder; Mike Volpe, senior vice president and general manager of the routing group at Cisco Systems; and Danny Rimer of Index Ventures have joined the company's board.
The company hopes to lure subscribers with access plans allowing them to use all of their home broadband applications, such as VoIP, while roaming internationally, for a single fee. The company said in a statement that it has registered 3000 members since launching last November.
