Intrado deploys Sonus technology for VoIP 911

Sonus Networks said this week it will supply switching and routing technologies to Intrado for use in delivering VoIP E9-1-1 calls through the company’s V9-1-1SM Mobility Service. Intrado, a provider of emergency and E-911 services, is working with Sonus and other partners to help its VoIP service provider customers comply with recent Federal Communications Commission rulings mandating VoIP providers provide E9-1-1 capabilities.
Intrado first introduced a solution for VoIP 911 three years ago. The basic service provided call routing instructions to the service provider based on pre-provisioned data supplied by the subscriber in order to get the call to the proper PSAP. That model didn’t provide call-back or location information. This Mobility Service using Sonus technology changes that.
“We use Sonus for its highly available and reliable [technology] for a public safety-grade solution for our customers where the application is not just mission critical; it is life critical,” said Ashish Patel, manager of emerging products at Intrado.
The 911 system now provides a real-time interface for remote and traveling users to enter their location information changes automatically. “We are pretty much a VoIP 911 provider from an end-to-end perspective,” Patel said.
Intrado will use a full suite of Sonus products to support the V9-1-1 Mobility Service. The products will manage traffic between VoIP networks and provide the necessary point of demarcation.
“Intrado is not different from a large carrier that wants to transport voice traffic, but the specific application is obviously a critical one. This highlights the nature of the Sonus solution’s reliability and scalability,” said Michael Rubin, director of product management at Sonus.
