Intrado gets a location on VoIP E911

Pending the close of a deal that will see it get acquired by West Corp., Intrado continues to move ahead on developing solutions for VoIP E911 and partnered this week with three location determination technology vendors.
The partnering agreements with Rosum Corp., S5 Wireless and Skyhook Wireless will focus on demonstrating how a range of location determination solutions can integrate with Intrado’s V911 services.
Stephen Meer, Intrado chief technology officer and co-founder, said in a statement that the framework his company is developing supports the continued progression of a more mobile-oriented VoIP solution that can be deployed with any device, in any location at any time.
Intrado hopes to solve the potentially show-stopping problem for VoIP providers in supporting customers that must now self-provision their location information by creating an environment where communication devices can automatically determine their location for E911 call routing purposes.
Meer said in an interview earlier this month when the acquisition was announced that he won’t be done with E911 until his dream of the Intelligent Emergency Network is complete. He said there are a lot of small companies and start-ups working on this nomadic E911 issue and that “some of them actually have legs.”
These new partners must be at least three of them.
Rosum, based in Mountain View, Calif., uses unmodified broadcast TV signals to locate the position of mobile assets, particularly in urban settings and inside buildings. The company’s investors include Charles River Ventures, Allegis Capital and Motorola.
Three-year-old S5 Wireless has developed a chip that can be attached or embedded in consumer, industrial, military or communications devices and transmit critical location and telemetry information. The device costs less than one dollar.
Boston-based Skyhook Wireless also was founded in 2003. It developed the first metro-area positioning system that leverages Wi-Fi rather than satellites or cell towers to deliver location data. The Skyhook Wi-Fi Positioning System requires no new hardware, works indoors and outdoors, provides an instant location and is more accurate than current technologies in congested downtown areas. The company is privately held.
