Performance Technologies develops high-density gateway, partners with MetaSwitch

Performance Technologies’ Voice Technology Group has developed its third generation and highest density media gateway module for original equipment manufacturers of VoIP solutions.

The MTN4300 Media Gateway Module is a fully integrated solution in PCI Telecom Mezzanine Card format. It features more than 2000 VoIP ports, the industry’s highest to date, and complete compatibility with the company’s recently announced CPC324 TDM/IP Edge Processor. It also boasts low power consumption and includes Performance Technologies’ NexusWare Linux-based Operating Environment and UniPorte Media & Voice Processing Software.

The new media and voice processing solutions, and the Voice Technology Group itself, resulted from the company’s acquisition of Mapletree Networks one year ago this month.

"Mapletree has been developing voice and media processing solutions for the OEM market for more than seven years," said Tim Resker, senior product manager for Performance Technologies Voice Technology Group. "Combining our technologies gives us unique positioning in the OEM media gateway market."

OEM gateway manufacturers can use the MTN4300 in a variety of wireless and wireline, carrier-grade media gateway applications, including trunk gateways, Class 5 replacement switches, digital loop carriers, access gateways, radio network controllers, mobile switching centers and base station controllers. The module also supports complete media server functionality including conferencing, announcements, recording and CALEA (Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act) legal intercept functionality.

"By using what we call ‘forking’ we can provide wiretaps per caller without impacting the port density," Resker said.

The mezzanine card form factor of the MTN4300 can be deployed on OEM proprietary blades or open system carrier baseboards such as the company’s CPC324 Edge Processor supporting PTMC option 2 and 5 pinouts.

Resker said the company’s open application development platform answers the growing outsourcing needs of manufacturers who are looking for drop-in subsystems that support any application.

The new module supports IPv4 and IPv6 as well as media gateway control protocol (MGCP) for integrating with softswitch environments. It will be in Beta testing in the first quarter and will be generally available in April.

On the business side, Performance Technologies announced a collaborative development partnership with MetaSwitch, a broadband Class 5 softswitch vendor. MetaSwitch introduced its broadband Class 5 softswitch more than two years ago. It was one of the first to support TDM as well as voice over ATM and IP.

The companies have established a joint design team of engineers from both organizations that will work together to bring MetaSwitch’s next-generation voice switching products to market faster.
