Just a few months after its public launch, Zayo Bandwidth is making its fifth acquisition, the company announced today.

A new Tier 2 and Tier 3 broadband provider, Zayo has now acquired VoicePipe Communications, a retail voice-over-IP provider, for an undisclosed sum.

The acquired business, a spin-off from competitive carrier ICG Communications, will form the basis of a new managed services unit within Zayo to be led by Dennis Kyle, who, like Zayo’s founders, is a former executive from ICG and Level 3 Communications, which acquired ICG last year.

In its quest to accumulate fiber assets in secondary and tertiary markets close to major cities, Zayo has already acquired Indiana Fiber Works, Minnesota’s Onvoy, Pennsylvania’s PPL Telecom and Tennessee’s Memphis Networx.

News of the VoicePipe acquisition came one day after Zayo announced it secured an $85 million debt facility, an addition to the $225 million in equity funding the company had already amassed.

VoicePipe began as a hosted IP PBX service offering from ICG that was spun off before ICG was acquired by Level 3 last year.
