BOSTON--Cayman Islands network operator caymanone and SOMA Networks' announced at the WiMAX World conference here that the carrier is using SOMA's broadband wireless access system to deliver VoIP and other applications to 44,000 customer on three of the Cayman Islands.

The service provider will deploy the vendor's SoftAir platform in 2.3 Ghz spectrum, following a trial of the system that successfully endured several Caribbean storms in recent months, including storms with Category 5 hurricane winds, according to SOMA.

"They wanted wireless not only for the advanced services it can offer, but also for it fast restoration capabilities, and its ability to survive future storms," said Tom Flak, vice president of product management at SOMA Networks.
