Terabeam plans WiMAX product

Terabeam Wireless, the once much-celebrated free space optics vendor acquired last year by YDI Wireless, announced that it will integrate the WiMAX system-on-a-chip recently launched by Fujitsu Microelectronics America into its Terabeam TeraMax 3.0 product family. The TeraMax 3.0 products also will use Terabeam's new wireless network management operating system, code-named "Logan." The TeraMax gear will be available in the fourth quarter of 2005.
Terabeam's platforms already use orthogonal frequency division multiplexing and operate in multiple frequency bands. The company's new WiMAX product will be compliant to the 802.16-2004 Fixed WiMAX standard. The Fujitsu MB87M3400 is compliant with that standard, and can be configured to be used in both base station and subscriber station applications. It is designed to support frequencies ranging from 2 to 11GHz in both licensed and license-exempt bands.
"Logan" has been under development for over three years and was a significant driver of Terabeam's acquisition in 2004 of KarlNet, Terabeam said in a statement. It's is a processor-agnostic operating system that can support multiple wireless modes. Currently, these modes include 802.11 and the company's proprietary TurboCell, and 802.16 will be supported by the fourth quarter of this year. "
