Mobile TV & Entertainment
more on the topic
Mobile TV is just one pixel in a larger mobile entertainment picture—OK, maybe it’s a lot of pixels, but music, games, gambling and other types of content are also part of that evolving picture. Industry observers have great expectations for all of the above. Here’s some of what we’ve overheard recently about mobile TV and entertainment:
“Mobile entertainment will account for more of the wireless industry’s growth. Networks are built out; but the wireless industry will continue to expand services; and need for richer bandwidth services will continue to drive network investment.”—Arthur Gruen, principal, Wilkofsky Gruen Associates, in the Telecommunications Industry Association’s “2007 Telecommunications Market Review and Forecast”
“In a new report, Juniper Research has estimated that the total global mobile entertainment market [including gambling, adult content, mobile games, mobile music, mobile TV and infotainment] is currently worth over $17 billion. The analyst firm forecasts this to grow to $47 billion by 2009 and $77 billion by 2011, as broadcast mobile TV and mass-market casual games really take off.”—Juniper Research press release
“By 2010, we predict mobile TV and mobile VoD [video on demand] will achieve combined revenues of around $18 billion worldwide, and that’s excluding revenues from advertising, sponsorship and added interactive services.”—Alison Casey, business director: content and services at Understanding & Solutions
