Sprint launches MTV channels
more on the topic
Sprint today announced it has partnered with MTV Networks to add premium mobile TV content channels to its Sprint TV lineup.
MTV is adapting its popular MTV, Comedy Central, CMT (Country Music Television) and VH1 channels into small-screen formatted video and audio streams to be unicast over the Sprint 1X and Power Vision EV-DO networks. The stations will feature popular shows ranging from Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart” to “CMT Insider” to MTV’s “The Real World.” While the video content will be mainly clips drawn from the networks’ broadcast TV programming, MTV and Sprint are augmenting the video content with a radio service with each channel, playing a constant stream of music, celebrity interviews and concerts. Sprint said it is first domestic carrier to offer a live stream of MTV radio content.
The service definitely comes at premium, however. Sprint is charging $5.95 a month for each of the four channels, not including per-bit data fees or the standard Sprint TV fees for its standard “basic cable” programming.
