VeriSign goes back to basics
more on the topic
So much for VeriSign’s experiment with telecom. The company said today its new strategy is to go back to basics and stick with its core competency: Internet security.
VeriSign will divest itself of several businesses including communications, billing and commerce. The company will instead pump money into extending its footprint in Web certificates (SSL) and the Internet registry business (VeriSign Naming Services).
VeriSign will refocus on its Naming Services, which operate the .com, .net and .tv Internet suffixes; Web certificates, also known as Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) Certificates and Extended Validation (EV) SSL Certificate; and Identity Protection Services, which is a suite of identity protection and authentication services designed to strengthen and protect consumers' digital identities.
Will Stofega, research manager of VoIP services at IDC, said in a statement that by divesting some non-core assets, VeriSign will also return to its heritage, with a high-margin, recurring revenue business model that will position it for future market success.
