VZW launches broadband router services
more on the topic
Seeking to capitalize on its 3G network as a broadband access service, Verizon Wireless has begun selling wireless broadband routers to business customers, positioning them as a network backup to wireline broadband services.
The broadband router works much like the typical office or enterprise router, although instead of connecting via Ethernet to a fiber, DSL or cable connection, it links wirelessly to Verizon Wireless’ CDMA 1X EV-DO network. It is selling a Cisco 3G Wireless HWIC router directly to its customers as well as supporting other solutions by AirLink, Digi, Bluetree and MobileBridge. The Cisco router also is Rev. A ready and can link into the new high-speed fast-uplink networks Verizon Wireless is deploying.
The service won’t substitute for a dedicated wireline connection as Verizon Wireless is charging per MB--pricing plans range from $40 to $550 a month for 40 MBs to 4500 MBs of data usage. VZW officials said the service is designed to be supplemental, adding extra capacity to the overall network or kicking in when the primary access line goes down. Also it is positioning it as a remote data node, suitable for connecting ATM machines or other devices in need of dedicated connectivity but not enormous amounts of bandwidth.
