Intrado providing V911 solution to Broadwing for AOL

When AOL picked Broadwing as the network provider for its AIM Phoneline service, Intrado also became a winner. The Longmont, Colo-based company will provide voice-over-IP E-911 service for AOL through its relationship with Broadwing.

Intrado's V911 service will be a comprehensive solution that includes call routing determination, call delivery and address management. Initially, the solution calls for Intrado to determine the appropriate routing instructions and terminate calls on behalf of Broadwing and its customers to the appropriate wireline public safety answering point (PSAP) based on the pre-provisioned location of the user.

Broadwing and Intrado have a long-standing relationship for emergency call services. Intrado now has more than 40 direct customers for V911 and 80 indirect customers served through resellers and wholesalers.

"We have made as comprehensive a solution as possible so that when we bring a customer on with V911, we are giving them the ability to one-stop shop for their E911-over VoIP requirements," said Marcus Andronici, product marketing manager for Intrado.

In February Intrado announced partnerships with several companies to develop solutions for VoIP E911, or V911. It partnered with three location determination technology vendors: Rosum Corp., S5 Wireless and Skyhook Wireless. In April, Intrado completed demonstrations with each of them in Seattle, Wash., proving that they could automatically locate a VoIP E911 caller and deliver that information to the appropriate PSAP. It also showed that location information can be integrated into Intrado's existing V911 Services platform in real time.

While the AOL deployment calls for users to provide location information, Intrado and others are developing solution like those above to accommodate any final FCC requirements.

"There are many interpretations of the FCC order so we develop services that can satisfy our customers' requirements as they seek to comply with the regulations. And we do it in a way that limits the amount of touch points and relationships they have to have," Andronici said.
