.mobi registration opens
more on the topic
Registration for new .mobi domain names opened today to the general public after wireless companies and trademarked entities got their first crack at the new internet suffix over the summer.
The new domain has been controversial to say the least with many global carriers and vendors backing the wireless Web-only URLs, while an equal number of players claim it as counterproductive. While the domain is supposed to direct browsers to websites formatted only for a WAP browser or other mobile device, many of those same browsers can already read the html and other mark-up languages normal websites are coded in. In addition, content companies can create mobile and standard versions of their sites under the same .com, .net, or .org domain names as most browsers can access the appropriate code as needed.
