ZTE today announced its first wireless win in North America, an agreement with Telus to supply EV-DO cards for the company'snew metropolitan 3G network.

It’s been a good week for Chinese vendors in the U.S. The deal comes on the heels of Wednesday’s announcement from Huawei that it had secured its first major mobile infrastructure contract with a CDMA carrier in the U.S., fast-growing Tier II provider Leap Wireless. Though neither deal is comparable to the multi-billion-dollar base station, core and handset deals European, Korean and North American vendors have struck with the major operators, they show that China is making some headway on the other side of the Pacific.

“North America is regarded as the most difficult market to break into and the move is a significant milestone in ZTE’s overseas expansion,” ZTE said in a statement.

ZTE has also made progress in another tough market, Europe. It has already secured deals with France Telecom and Hutchison Whampoa, which own the Orange and 3 mobile providers, respectively, for UMTS/high-speed downlink packet access (HSDPA) data cards. On the infrastructure side, most of ZTE’s wins outside of China have been in developing in Africa and Asia.
