IPWireless picked for Sprint 4G trial, Orange deployment

BARCELONA, SPAIN--IPWireless received two major carrier validations of its TD-CDMA technology this week, announcing at the 3GSM World Congress that Sprint has selected its technology for a next-generation access trial and Orange will be the first carrier to test its TDtv infrastructure.

Sprint, which is already trialing IPWireless’ time division-CDMA technology over its 2.5 GHz spectrum, has agreed to extend that trial to IPWireless’ next-generation or “4G” technology, which IPWireless is developing to meet the upcoming 3GPP’s long-evolution (LTE) standards. The TD-CDMA technology will develop peak data speeds of 29 Mb/s, well in excess of the 3GPP’s requirements, and will be made compatible with orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) and multiple input/multiple output technologies currently being incorporated into the standard, IPWireless officials said today.

Orange, which already used IPWireless’s TD-CDMA infrastructure for broadband access in Slovakia, announced it will test a TV-optimized version of the technology over unpaired UMTS spectrum in the U.K. IPWireless unveiled the new TD architecture last month, targeting it at European operators searching for a use for their TD-UMTS spectrum won at auction.
