Telcordia MVNO model going the distance

Total Call Mobile, a new mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) with an international long-distance niche, became the latest win in this wireless space for Telcordia.

Telcordia will support Total Call Mobile with its Hosted Solutions products to help the company launch its prepaid mobile phone service.

The new MVNO’s CEO Mark Leafstedt said in a statement that Telcordia helped it launch service in less than 90 days. The company targets multicultural ethnic groups in the U.S. who place international calls. It offers nationwide coverage over Sprint’s Nationwide Sprint PCS Network.

Cathy McMahon, executive director of product management for Hosted Solutions at Telcordia, said Total Call has selected enabling vendors other than those Telcordia has worked with for other MVNOs. “So it’s kind of a testament to a [launch] process that included a new partner,” she said.

The service features International Direct Dial service and includes native language Customer Service in Spanish, Vietnamese, Chinese, Korean, Tagalog and English. Total Call Mobile is directly affiliated with Total Call International, a switch-based International long-distance carrier.

It also marks Telcordia’s 11th MVNO customer since launching its Hosted Solutions business last year. Among those 11 are Disney Mobile, Flying J, Movido and Virgin Mobile USA. Telcordia’s Hosted Solution for MVNOs includes elements of its Maestro IMS portfolio including its Converged Application Server and Converged Real Time Charging solution.

“One advantage we have is our ability to scale and the products we are using have certainly demonstrated scale with operators such as Virgin Mobile, which uses the same base product,” McMahon said. “One of the important tasks we have is to manage the load on the system and make sure we are well ahead of the curve in terms of capacity.”

The Hosted Solutions portfolio supports both pre-paid and post pay services. So far, Disney is one of the few MVNOs offering a post pay service.
