When Alcatel-Lucent handed the proverbial ribbon-cutting scissors to Raoul Fontanez, Chief Executive Officer of Onemax, at the launch of the world’s first WiMAX Rev-e network in the Dominican Republic in October, Amit Chawla, vice president of global solutions and engineering at Veraz Networks, watched as the company basked in the glory of driving the implementation.

Last week Chawla and company got their own chance to bask.

Whereas Alcatel drove the project and supplied technology for the radio access network and other pieces of the puzzle, Veraz, a provider of IP softswitch and media gateway solutions, announced it is the supplier for the network’s IMS core.

Chawla said it is the first IMS-over-mobile-WiMAX deployment in the Americas. Onemax is using Veraz' IMS-over-WiMAX solutions, which include the Veraz User Services Core, the ControlSwitch and I-Gate 4000 series of media gateways.

Onemax is using its multi-vendor environment to deliver Internet, multimedia and VoIP services over mobile broadband. Other vendors also include Reef Point, which merged with NexTone this week.

Veraz’ ControlSwitch enables Onemax to integrate with third-party components including application servers, end user devices, session border controllers and operations support systems. Its I-Gate 4000 media gateways provide connectivity between Onemax and other network operators.

Fontanez said Veraz was instrumental in getting this project off the ground. In January, the company starts the second phase of its implementation, which will include quality-of-service controls for voice packets from Veraz.

“We will deliver QoS control from the WiMAX endpoint to make sure voice packets don’t get swamped by some user’s download from the IP network,” Chawla said.
